Mechanic

Summary

The Mechanic role is to maintain all district vehicles to ensure they operate properly and in a state of excellence that present no problems or interruptions to the educational programs of the district.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma or training and experience that are considered equivalent
• A proficiency in repair and maintenance of buses, trucks, and other automotive equipment
• Electrical, mechanical, or automotive air conditioning certifications preferred but not required
• Certified Driver’s License (CDL) or be eligible and willing to obtain a CDL

Compensation based on a salary schedule and will commensurate with ability and experience.

Responsibilities

• Works with other mechanics to ensure buses are safe and road worthy
• Open and/or close bus shop based on assignment
• Ensure buses are prepared for operation
• Knowledgeable in brake and engine repair, and general mechanical knowledge
• Ensure trip buses ready for travel when needed (fuel, check tires, clean inside and outside)
• Proficient in the use of hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists
• Diagnosis and repair of district vehicles
• Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition
• Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery
• Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment
• Safely raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists
• Test drive trucks and buses to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly
• Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers, and pressure gauges
• Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair work
• Maintain high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work areas
• Reports all conditions that present safety hazards on buses and other automotive equipment immediately to the Director of Transportation
• Drive route buses as needed
• Attend additional training when necessary in accord with the District’s needs
• Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee

Essential Functions

Physical Requirements - Must be physically able to operate a variety of diagnostic equipment applicable to the industry.  Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Must have the ability to move around and stand on hard surfaces for long periods of time.

Intelligence - Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define/diagnose problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in verbal or diagrammatic form and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  

Language Ability – Must be able to communicate and be understood by supervisor and co-workers.  Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, technical manuals, trade journals, etc.

Sensory – Must be able to visually or otherwise access written and printed content, and respond both verbally and in writing. Must have the ability to understand and respond to the verbal expressions of others. 

Verbal Aptitude - Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to give oral and written instructions.  Must be able to communicate effectively.  Must possess the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence. 

Attendance - Must have the ability to work for the duration of the daily contracted time period, and to be physically present and at assigned work, with only infrequent unexcused absences, during the contract year
