Instructional Paraprofessional Job Description

 

Roles:

  1. Monitor and assist students during teacher-directed, whole class instruction.
  2. Provide small group instruction (pre-teaching or alternative instruction) to students under teacher direction.
  3. Provide follow-up instruction after teacher directed instruction.
  4. Monitor and support students during independent work or cooperative learning activities under teacher direction.
  5. Support students’ instructional programs through the preparation of materials and the fulfillment of other clerical tasks.
  6. Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

Must meet one of the qualification descriptions below:

  1. High School Diploma/GED and 60 hours of Higher Education or
  2. High School Diploma/GED and Passed ETS Paraprofessional Assessment or
  3. High School Diploma/Ged and Associates Degree or higher

 

School Participation and Team Work:

  • Arrives at work on time, punctually attends and actively participates in all required meetings and training.
  • Required to be a respectful, cooperative, and reliable team member and participant in school activities.
  • Consults with Principal or designee, in a timely fashion, to address the needs of students who are struggling.
  • Responsible for communicating and coordinating with subject teachers regarding lessons, child behavior, parent communication, and reports through regular meetings.
  • Participates on required committees as prescribed by the Principal.
  • Attends regular supervisory meetings with the Principal.

 

Essential Functions:

Language

  • good expressive and receptive English language skills to be able to communicate with and be understood by students, co-workers and parents, receive their responses and respond to them appropriately.

Sensory

  • ability to track and observe students in a 360-degree classroom, gym or cafeteria environment to ensure compliance and safety.
  • able to visually or otherwise access written and printed content, and respond verbally and in writing.
  • the ability to understand and respond to the verbal expressions of others, often in a noisy environment with multiple speakers and background noise, or outside.

Movement

  • ability to move around inside on hard surface and industrial carpeted surfaces, and to travel at a brisk, walking pace relatively long inside distances, without needing to stop or rest.
  • able to move around outside, sometimes on a grassy or uneven outdoor surface, to supervise students outdoors.  
  • able to work outdoors, for sustained time periods, sometimes during very hot or very cold weather conditions. (If applicable:  Must be able to perform sustained CPR with the subject on the floor.)

Cognitive

  • able to conform behavior to that which is socially accepted as being appropriate to an adult and positive role model who is working with young and impressionable children.
  • ability to receive complex oral and written instructions and execute them appropriately.
  • able to master the content being taught in a particular class, grade or academic course to be able to accurately assist students with its mastery as directed by the classroom teacher.
  • good executive functioning skills sufficient to ensure timely and accurate compliance with detailed federal, state and local record keeping requirements.
  • able to present material to students and determine, in the moment, based on verbal and nonverbal cues of students, whether or not the expressive language used by the teacher has been received and is being processed appropriately by students.

 

Additional  Job Responsibilities:

Attendance

  • ability to work for the duration of the daily contracted time period, and to be physically present and at assigned work, with only infrequent unexcused absences, during the contract year.
